About Heydonworks So What Is This Website For, Then?

My name is Heydon Pickering and HeydonWorks (like "Steelworks") is my blog about design, coding and music. I'm a Web Designer from Norwich, England who specialises in CSS, typography, semantic HTML and Responsive Design. I have written about web typography for Smashing Magazine and Web Designer Depot and I have created popular icon-based web fonts available through Font Squirrel et al. As a freelancer, contractor and employee of Neontribe (where we paper prototype a lot) I have built websites, social media profiles and application interfaces for clients that include The Guardian newspaper, Paul Smith, Sound & Music and Channel 4.

If you are a Web Designer yourself, you may be interested to know that I designed this blog without the use of images, CSS classes or javascript. Graphical symbols such as the cogs and media icons you see are typographical glyphs that I created and embedded into the site's stylesheet using base64 encoding. Not only is this more efficient than using images, but it make's the site's interface resolution independent. The site should look exceptionally crisp on your Android, iPhone or Blackberry.

Music

Music is a big part of my life and I consider my compositions some of my better 'works', hence the blog category that includes some tunes and the odd review. I have records available under the names Wet Face and Bobby Howitzer. The former is a 2 piece punk blues band, the later a collection of punk 'n' roll party mash-ups.
